Shasta Regional Medical Center earns Joint Commission Diabetes Certification
Redding, CA — February 22, 2010. Shasta Regional Medical Center is the first inpatient diabetes program in California to earn a Certificate for Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Care from The Joint Commission, the national organization that accredits healthcare across the United States.
According to the American Diabetes Association, (ADA) diabetes is listed as the seventh leading causes of death with 23.1% of the population 60 and older having diabetes.
“What this certification means for patients with diabetes is that Shasta Regional meets rigorous standards to control patient blood-sugar levels while they are hospitalized; regardless of whether they are hospitalized for diabetes complications or another reason,” said Dr. McCampbell, Chief Medical Officer. “The communities we serve consist of an aging population, and according to the ADA, one out of four seniors have diabetes.”
At Shasta Regional, our primary focus is on seniors and health-related issues they face every day. To provide seniors with the best care, we have achieved advanced certification in Stroke, Chest Pain and now Diabetes. Our nurses, doctors and staff are educated and trained to provide the highest quality of care in order to improve patient outcomes and help lead them to a better quality of life.
“Shasta Regional voluntarily pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation of our inpatient diabetes care to enhance the safety and quality of care we provide our patients,” said Cyndy Gordon, Chief Nursing Officer. “We’re proud to achieve this distinction.”
Shasta Regional’s outpatient Diabetes Care Management program was recognized two years ago by the American Diabetes Association for meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.
The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 17,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. It is the nation's oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. The Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
